International Recycling Day 2018
International Recycling Day was established by UNESCO on the 17th of May as a day to remember and make the community aware about the importance of recycling and to encourage everyone to reduce their environmental impact as much as possible.
Over the last 10 years, global waste production has increased to almost 3 million tons per day and the effects are seen and felt on land and in seas everywhere, yet there are not enough solutions in place to solve this growing issue. Given these alarming figures, it is imperative that we raise awareness and act both as communities and as individuals to deal with this problem that touches us all. We wish to help others see the value of recycling and how waste should be reconverted into a product that does not pollute our planet.
On May 17th every year, International Recycling Day is celebrated, although it is something that we should participate in every day. How? By being consistent, treating waste effectively and thus protecting the environment and fighting against climate change.
In order to help achieve this, Khiri Travel – the initiator of IMPACT Vietnam – hosted special events and cleanups in numerous locations. Evergreen Labs was pleased to attend two of them.
Clean-up in Hoi An
In Hoi An, to celebrate and raise awareness for this day, Khiri and Grasshopper Adventures co-organized the clean up of Cam Kim Island in Hoi An. This will be the first of many that will be organized in a year.
The event started at Grasshopper Adventures office where bikes, helmets, and clean-up kits were distributed to the 23 eager participants. The countryside cycling tour of Grasshopper Adventures led us through beautiful sceneries and well-distanced stops. For this event, 2 of these stops were for the clean-up.
The island sure did look a lot more beautiful with less trash after the event. We, at Evergreen Labs, were happy to participate in this event and look forward to taking part in the future cleanups.
Thank you Grasshopper Adventures – Asia’s Best Bike Tours for organizing and Fred Wissink for the great photos!
Saigon Forum for Recycling and Upcycling
International Recycling Day 2018 – Saigon Forum for Recycling and Upcycling was hosted and organized by Khiri Travel Vietnam, Hoa Sen University and IMPACT Vietnam last month. This event brought together speakers from various organizations including: Evergreen Labs, Hoa Sen University, NTTU, Clean Up Vietnam, Wholistik Permaculture, UPP! and Zero Waste Saigon.
During the morning session there was an educational forum for University students, High school students, members of the relevant interest groups and members of the travel industry.
In the afternoon there was an interactive, engaging, fun group of activities for younger students, presented by the speaking groups from the morning.
