About this experience

Ha Giang is one of the best places for trekkers and backpackers in Northern Vietnam because of its wilderness. You will see a lot of fantastic scenery across the entire area with hills, valleys and villages filled with various ethnic minorities (Hmong, Tay, Dao, Nung, Lo Lo, Giay, Pu Peo, etc.). The farthest and most beautiful place of Ha Giang province is Dong Van Karst Global Geopark, designated by UNESCO as one of 77 sites with the important geological and cultural heritage. This geopark is home to 17 ethnic minority groups, which create a unique and rich cultural heritage of the area.

In this tour, you will explore this mysterious part of Vietnam but in a more comfortable mode than an adventurous ride. A private car  ride allow you browse through all marvelous sceneries and ethnic villages nestled behind high mountain ranges in day time while enjoying good quality of beds, bathrooms and shower facilities for night time.

  • Visit all popular Ha Giang attractions such as Twin Mountain (Nui Doi) in Quan Ba,  H’Mong King Palace, Dong Van Ancient Town, Dong Van Market & Ma Pi Leng Pass.
  • Meet with local families from ethnic minority groups, namely White H’mong, Red Dzao, and Tay and learn about their cultural heritage.
  • Short trekking to Lung Cu Flagpole and take in the view from high above to contemplate the country’s beauty.

Your itinerary

Standard program

Accommodation: 1 night in quality homestay 3 star (deluxe room) and 1 night in hotel 3 star (deluxe rooms); 2 people/ 1 room.

Day 1: Hanoi – Ha Giang – Quan Ba (L/D)

Morning:  Hotel pick-up by a private car. We then head to north towards Viet Tri and Tuyen Quang (Route No.2) through the Red River Delta region. You will stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Tuyen Quang Town, an area famous for green tea plantations.

Afternoon: After lunch, we will enter the Rocky Plateau and soon you’ll be amazed by the spectacular rocky fields scattered on mountains of Quan Ba district. In Quan Ba, you will get to see Twin Mountains (Nui Doi) – a symbolic image of Quan Ba, and then descend Lung Tam hemp weaving village to explore the local traditional craftsmanship. Drive through the  Can Ty valley, along the Mien river to meet with H’Mong, Nung ethnic people. When the sun sets, we’ll stay in Nam Dam village, Quan Ba district.

Evening: Join your host in dinner cooking with local ingredients. After dinner, you can freely walk around the village for exploration or heal your sore body  with Red Dao’s herbal hot tub.

Overnight in Dao house which was built as a community guest house with financial support from Caritas Switzerland to feature traditional architecture Dao Ethnic minority.

Day 2: Quan Ba – Yen Minh – Dong Van (B/L/D)

Morning: After breakfast, we will continue our journey to more distant villages of Lung Cam and Sa Phin commune. A stop will be made en route to visit an H’mong Village in Lung Cam commune where a movie called “Pao’s story” was set. In Sa Phin, we’ll visit the residence of the Vuong Family, known as “Hmong Lord’s Palace”, which was built in 1920 along the lines of a traditional Chinese courtyard house.

Noon: Have lunch in Dong Van town.

Afternoon: Explore the hidden trails and countryhood behind the town.

Evening: Go back to Dong Van Town, have dinner and chill out in the Dong Van ancient town. Overnight in your hotel.

Day 3: Dong Van – Meo Vac (B/L/D)

Morning: After breakfast, you can walk around Dong Van Old Quarter and its local market by yourselves.

We then visit Lung Cu Flag Tower, standing on the summit of the Dragon mountain – this is the Northernmost point of Vietnam. After, we will drive to a nearby pretty and authentic café Cuc Bac (North Pole) among the LoLo’s community.

Afternoon: We continue on a roller-coaster ride along the legendary Ma Pi Leng pass. Spend extra time enjoying the spectacular view, with the Nho Que river winding through the mountains.

We then head to Meo Vac town to settle for the night.

Day 4: Meo Vac – Ha Giang – Ha Noi (B/L)

Morning: After breakfast, we will make the ride back to Ha Noi, returning by the same route. On the way, you can stop to take photos of the magnificent mountains and make the most of your last bit of time in this beautiful region.

You will stop for lunch at a local restaurant and arrive back at your hotel in Hanoi at around 18:00.

What's the weather like?

  • Depending on the altitude, climate will change. The province is good to visit throughout the year. September to November and March to May are when the temperature is most pleasurable, in their mid 20’s.
  • December and a bit into February the temperature falls, especially in the mountains so carry some good clothing.
  • October and November is peak season for local Vietnamese tourists.
